What Does Sound Alchemist Julie Jules Smoot Mean When She Says, “Nothing Is Required of You”?

I say, “Nothing is required of you,” I am not being poetic.
I am being deliberate.
In a world that constantly demands performance — emotional performance, productivity performance, healing performance — the nervous system rarely gets to rest without expectation.
“Nothing is required of you” is not an aesthetic phrase.
It is a structural boundary.
It Means You Do Not Have to Perform Healing
In many wellness spaces, there is an unspoken pressure:
Relax correctly.
Cry if you are supposed to.
Have a breakthrough.
Feel something profound.
Transcend.
Trauma-informed work rejects that.
When I say nothing is required, I mean:
You do not have to relax.
You do not have to process.
You do not have to access deep emotion.
You do not have to “get it right.”
You are allowed to listen without achieving anything.
It Means Your Nervous System Sets the Pace
Complex trauma teaches the body to brace.
Chronic pain teaches the body to guard.
Grief teaches the body to tighten.
If sound, language, or guidance demands surrender before your body is ready, it can feel unsafe.
Nothing is required means:
You can keep your eyes open.
You can move.
You can stop the track.
You can disengage at any time.
You can remain neutral.
Choice restores safety.
Safety restores regulation.
It Means You Are Not Being Measured
You are not being graded on how calm you become.
You are not being evaluated for spiritual depth.
You are not being assessed for emotional vulnerability.
There is no outcome you must reach.
In trauma-informed sound, the goal is not bliss.
The goal is steadiness.
Sometimes the most healing outcome is simply:
“My body did not get more activated.”
That is enough.
It Means Autonomy Comes First
For many survivors, autonomy was interrupted.
Boundaries were crossed.
Consent was ignored.
Experiences were minimized.
Nothing is required is a corrective experience.
It centers consent.
It reminds you that your participation is voluntary.
It reinforces that you are allowed to choose how much you engage.
It Is an Invitation, Not a Command
You may feel calm.
You may feel restless.
You may feel angry.
You may feel nothing at all.
All of those responses are allowed.
You are not required to override your body to fit the environment.
The environment is structured to respect your body.
Why It Matters
Healing spaces that demand transformation can unintentionally recreate pressure.
I am not interested in recreating pressure.
I am interested in creating sound spaces where:
Low stimulus is intentional.
Boundaries are clear.
Autonomy is preserved.
Regulation is prioritized.
Nothing is required of you while listening.
Not because nothing matters.
But because your nervous system matters more than performance.
And sometimes the most radical thing you can experience is a space where you are not being asked to become anything other than what you are in this moment.
