At 48 years old, I do not need a man supervising me, monitoring where I go, questioning where I am, or behaving as though I owe him an explanation for how I live my life. I am a grown woman. I make my own decisions. I answer for myself.
 
I was raised by my mother to be independent. She taught me how to stand on my own two feet, take responsibility for myself, handle my own life, and keep moving forward. That independence is part of who I am.
 
This song comes from reaching the point where enough is enough.
 
Someone who did not raise me, was not there throughout my life, and did not help shape the woman I became does not suddenly acquire authority over me. Concern does not equal control. Being related to someone does not give them ownership over my movements. And being a man does not grant someone automatic authority over a woman.
 
“You Never Raised Me” is for every grown woman who is tired of being questioned, monitored, diminished, or treated as though she requires supervision.
 
I don't need permission to leave.
I don't need permission to exist independently.
I don't need a man to manage my life.
